Returning to the Olympic spotlight after an 18-month suspension for missing three doping tests, the 28-year-old athlete from Charleston entered the Stade de France, packed with nearly 80,000 spectators and millions more watching worldwide, determined to make an impact. “I wanted to grab attention and highlight our discipline,” Saunders explained. “We’re shot putters with our own style, and we deserve as much recognition as the sprinters.”

Saunders’ performance secured them a spot in the final, finishing seventh with a throw of 18.62 meters. While their bold appearance caught the world’s eye, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. Saunders has a history of using their platform in elite sports to advocate for various causes.

The Tokyo Protest

Three years ago, at the Tokyo Olympics, Saunders competed wearing a Joker mask and a Hulk mask, symbolizing their alter ego, “The Hulk.” After winning silver in Tokyo, Saunders nearly faced sanctions from the International Olympic Committee for crossing their arms in an “X” on the podium, a gesture in support of oppressed communities worldwide. The IOC prohibits athletes from making social or political statements during competitions, but Saunders remained unapologetic.

In addition to their athletic achievements, Saunders is known for speaking openly about their challenging upbringing and battles with depression. After seeking help from a university therapist and entering a mental health facility, they were diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. These struggles have shaped Saunders’ resilience and commitment to mental health advocacy.

During their time away from competition, Saunders focused on training and self-improvement. “I became at peace with the situation and used the time to grind,” Saunders shared. “It gave me more time to focus on making this Olympic team, and more time to focus on myself and my mental health.”

Their journey to Paris was marked by perseverance, and their unique style at the Games serves as a reminder of their strength and individuality. As they prepare for the final, Raven Saunders continues to inspire with their message of self-expression, resilience, and the fight for recognition, both on and off the field.
