Now, at 78, she’s healthier than ever.
Comments on the post read: “Inspiration, strength, and courage. She is beautiful,” “We need more of this,” and “More power to her! She should be very proud 👏 amazing work.”
So, who’s this viral grandma?
Meet Joan MacDonald. She’s been in the fitness game for eight years, starting her transformation journey at age 70. Along with her fitness videos, Joan shares motivational clips and photos documenting her incredible physical change.
“I started weight training and planning my macros in January 2017. I was 70 years old, 5’3″, weighed 198.6 lbs, and was on heart medication, acid reflux medication, and dealing with vertigo and arthritis,” Joan recalls.

She admits that starting out was painful due to arthritis and her weight. “If there was something I couldn’t do, my coach would find an alternative for me. I never gave up and always found a way to keep going,” she says.

The fitness influencer follows a regimen of eating five times a day and drinking three liters of water, but she also knows the importance of mental well-being and treating herself occasionally: “I have free meals a few times a month where I don’t track, I just enjoy myself. I don’t avoid any food groups and try to eat as healthily as possible, but I do love Nutella.”
She firmly denies using steroids or performance drugs, attributing her success to hard work, effort, and discipline.

Joan’s message is clear: improve your health, both mentally and physically. “Do it for your health, ladies, it’s never too late to feel great about your health!” she wrote in a post.
Stories like Joan’s remind us of the remarkable things humans can achieve and how we can overcome fears and stereotypes that often limit us.
The key is to work for ourselves, love, and care for our bodies in ways that make us feel comfortable and fulfilled!
