Unprovoked Attack Leaves Two Injured
According to an arrest report, Mordechai Brafman, 27, fired 17 shots at the victims in what police described as an “unprovoked” attack. Brafman told officers that while driving his truck, he “saw two Palestinians” and opened fire on their car, believing he had killed them. However, the two men—an Israeli father and son vacationing in South Florida—survived the shooting. One victim was shot in the shoulder, while the other was grazed by a bullet.
Brafman is being held without bond at a Miami-Dade County jail on second-degree attempted murder charges. A judge has also ordered him to stay away from the victims, the Miami Herald reported.

Suspect’s Attorney Cites Mental Health Crisis
Dustin Tischler, Brafman’s attorney, said his client was experiencing a “severe mental health crisis” at the time of the shooting, which allegedly caused him to “fear for his life.”

“It is believed that his ability to make sound judgments was significantly compromised,” Tischler said in a statement to The Associated Press. He added that Brafman is seeking “necessary treatment” while cooperating with law enforcement.

Calls for Hate Crime Charges
The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, has called for federal hate crime charges against Brafman. The group argues that his alleged bias against Palestinians should warrant the charges, regardless of the victims’ ethnicity.
“This horrific attack underscores the urgent need to address anti-Palestinian and anti-Muslim hate in our society,” said CAIR-Florida Executive Director Imam Abdullah Jaber.
The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office confirmed that its hate crimes unit is investigating the case. In a statement, the office said it “reviews every criminal offense that has the potential of being motivated by hate.”

Rising Tensions Amid Israel-Gaza Conflict
The shooting comes amid a reported rise in anti-Muslim, anti-Palestinian, and antisemitic incidents across the United States since the start of Israel’s war in Gaza, which began after an October 7, 2023, attack by Palestinian Hamas militants.
Recent incidents include the attempted drowning of a 3-year-old Palestinian American girl in Texas, the fatal stabbing of a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy in Illinois, and the shooting of three Palestinian American students in Vermont. Antisemitic incidents have also surged, including threats of violence against Jews at Cornell University and physical assaults against Jewish individuals in multiple states.

Community Leaders Condemn Violence
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava thanked prosecutors for pursuing hate crime charges in the case. “Hate has no place in our community,” she wrote on X.
Local and national leaders have called for unity and condemned the violence, urging communities to reject hate and bigotry in all forms.

As the investigation continues, Brafman remains in custody awaiting trial. Legal experts say the case could set a precedent for how hate-motivated crimes are prosecuted, particularly in the context of rising tensions linked to international conflicts.
For now, the victims—who were mistakenly targeted due to their perceived ethnicity—are recovering from their injuries. Their identities have not been publicly released, but authorities confirmed they are Israeli nationals visiting the U.S.
