Donald trump plans to run a third term - “there are methods”: donald trump suggests a third term—but we're not really sure if he's allowed

Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy by suggesting he might run for a third presidential term. But is that even possible under U.S. law? His recent remarks have sparked debate and concern, but before jumping to conclusions, it’s important to understand what the Constitution actually allows—and what it doesn’t.

What the 22nd Amendment Says About Presidential Term Limits

The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, was created to prevent any president from holding office for too long.

It clearly states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” This means that once a person has served two elected terms as president, they are legally barred from being elected again.

This rule was introduced after Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to four terms, raising concerns about the concentration of power. Since then, no U.S. president has legally served more than two terms.

What Did Donald Trump Say About a Third Term?

In an interview with NBC News, Trump said:

“A lot of people want me to do it… I’m not joking… There are methods which you could do it.”

He didn’t elaborate on what those methods might be, but the comment quickly gained traction.

Some of Donald Trump’s supporters have floated ideas like running as vice president and then taking over the presidency if the sitting president steps down. Others suggest amending the Constitution altogether. However, both options come with major legal and political roadblocks.

Is It Legally Possible?

In short: very unlikely. Any effort to change the Constitution would require two-thirds of Congress to agree, plus approval from three-fourths of U.S. states. It’s a long, difficult process with almost no precedent for success in this context.

While Trump’s third-term comments may excite his supporters or alarm his critics, the Constitution is clear. Breaking the two-term limit isn’t just difficult—it’s nearly impossible. For now, the law still stands between Donald Trump and a third run at the presidency.
