Joe Biden Congratulates Elected Claudia Sheinbaum After Historic Triumph in Mexico

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, congratulated on Monday the winner of the elections in Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, the first woman to govern the country in history, to whom he reiterated the commitment to promote the interest of both nations together.

“I expressed our commitment to promote the values and interests of both nations for the benefit of our peoples,” Biden said in a statement, hours after the preliminary results were released that give the Morena candidate as the resounding winner.

Joe Biden sends message to Claudia Sheinbaum

Joe Biden congratulated Sheinbaum on her “historic” election as Mexico’s first female president. The candidate of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM), obtained between 58.3% and 60.7% of the votes in Sunday’s elections, according to the quick count of the National Electoral Institute (INE).

Behind her, with a range of between 26.6% and 28.6% of the support, were her main rival, the opposition Xóchitl Gálvez, and the standard-bearer of the Citizens’ Movement, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, who received between 9.9% and 10.8% of the votes.

“I look forward to working closely with President-elect Sheinbaum in a spirit of partnership and friendship that reflects the enduring ties between our two countries,” Biden said Monday morning.

The congratulations were joined by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who in another statement reiterated the commitment to “work together with Mexico as neighbors, friends and partners” to promote mutual economic and security interests.

“We deeply value our special relationship with Mexico, which is based on shared democratic values, deep economic ties, and strong cultural and family connections.”

Sheinbaum, who will take office on October 1, was the favorite. And after the forecasts come true, a lot of continuity is expected in Mexico’s relationship with the United States, countries that share the longest and busiest border in the world, in addition to two strongly intertwined economies.

However, a month after his inauguration, the United States will hold its presidential election, in which Biden is seeking re-election and will compete against former President Donald Trump.

The Republican candidate starts as the favorite and his victory could mean an abrupt turn in relations between the two countries, since they would presumably revive plans such as building a wall between the two borders and expelling all Mexican citizens without status to reside legally in the United States.
