At 31 years old, Justus Kelley was crowned Miss USA 2026 at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami — and she rewrote the record books doing it. She is the oldest woman ever to win the title, the first married contestant to be crowned, and the first mother to wear the Miss USA crown in the pageant’s history. None of that was even legally possible before late 2023, when the organization finally lifted long-standing restrictions on marital status, age, and parenthood.
The Woman Behind the Crown
Kelley earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University Bloomington and now works as a senior philanthropic adviser at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Arlington, Virginia. She married her college sweetheart, Tyler Rashad Kelley, and together they became foster parents — a commitment that grew into something larger. The couple co-founded Foster Footprints, an initiative dedicated to advocacy for children navigating the foster care system.
That résumé would stand on its own without a pageant crown attached. But Kelley entered the Miss USA competition anyway, representing Virginia, and won — which says something both about her and about the kind of woman the pageant is now willing to celebrate. Until the rule changes that reshaped beauty pageants went into effect two years ago, her entry form would have been rejected before she ever reached the stage.
What the Rules Used to Say — and What Changed
For most of Miss USA’s history, the competition barred married women and mothers from competing entirely. The logic, never openly defended but always enforced, was that the ideal titleholder was young, single, and without children — a kind of cultural artifact from a different era of American womanhood. In late 2023, the organization formally revised those rules, removing restrictions on marital status, parenthood, and age ceilings.
Kelley is the direct result of that shift — not as a symbol, but as a person who was now simply allowed to show up. She showed up and won. At 31, she becomes the oldest Miss USA titleholder on record, a distinction that would have been impossible under the old framework not because she wasn’t qualified, but because the rules were designed to exclude her category of woman altogether.
She will now represent the United States at Miss Universe 2026, set to be held in Puerto Rico later this year.
