Kat Torres, a former Brazilian model and social media influencer, has been convicted of human trafficking and slavery. Her seemingly glamorous life on social media masked a dark reality—one that involved exploiting vulnerable individuals for her own gain.
The case against Torres began when two Brazilian women who lived with her mysteriously disappeared in 2022. Concerned family members reported their absence to the authorities, prompting an investigation by the FBI. What they uncovered was shocking.
Brazilian Influencer Kat Torres Is Accused of Human Trafficking
Many times things are not as they seem and despite the fact that the influencer was recognized for her self-help videos, the authorities of the USA and Brazil found that Kat Torres had several women locked up in her home in inhumane conditions and against their will.
This has undoubtedly been shocking news for many of us, but especially for those who were fans of the influencer, since Kat had created an image on social networks of personal improvement showing an almost perfect life. She was so perfect that she even dated actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
As if it were a sect, the influencer promoted subscription services and 101 consultations through her social networks that promised economic and emotional improvements to her followers.
The Kat Torres Investigation
According to an investigation by BBC Eye Investigations and BBC News Brazil, there are several testimonies apart from the two missing women, which confirm the exploitation perpetuated by the influencer.
“She seemed like she had overcome violence in her childhood, abuse, all these traumatic experiences,” survivor Ana told the BBC.
Although Ana was not one of the missing women, she was a victim of Kat Torres, who took advantage of her moment of vulnerability after having ended an abusive relationship and having had a difficult life since childhood.
“She was on the cover of magazines. She was seen with famous people such as Leonardo DiCaprio. Everything I saw seemed credible,” said Ana.
On the other hand, Amanda, another survivor of this tragic situation, expressed that what she liked about Kat was that he made her feel special.
“All my doubts, my questions, my decisions: I always took them to her first, so that we could make decisions together,” she told.
The Two Missing Women
Desirrê Freitas and Letícia Maia are the two women who were missing at that time.
For her part, Desirrê is a Brazilian woman who before all this lived in Germany, however, when starting Torres’ “coach sessions”, the influencer asked her to go to the United States to take care of her with the excuse of being suicidal and needing her. Over time, she began working for her as a stripper seven days a week with no way to escape since the influencer had taken possession of all of her IDs and left her without money.
Letícia Maia’s story is similar, but the now convicted influencer manipulated her from the age of 14 to move to the United States as an au pair and then leave it and go to work and live with her.
It was also revealed that in early July 2024, influencer Kate Torres was sentenced by a Brazilian judge to eight years in prison for subjecting Desirrê to human trafficking and slavery. And it was concluded that she had lured the young woman to the United States for the purposes of sexual exploitation.
At least 20 women have reported being defrauded or exploited by Torres. Torres’ lawyer told the BBC that she appealed her conviction and she maintains her innocence.
