Increasingly popular, the cyber-tattoo style, also known as a tribal or neo-tribal, is here to stay. Thanks to the boom of “Y2K” trends from the year 2000, this style has gained lots of popularity, reaching up to 40M views on TikTok.
This type of ink is a hybrid of traditional tribal which were larger and more solid and have transformed into more delicate lines that create visual effects, giving an almost alien aura.

Initially, these designs were famous at the end of the 90’s and the beginning of 2000. Some people state that they are tied to people’s culture (ie Polynesian), but legit ones are Polynesian or pacific islanders, so getting one could result in cultural appropriation.
However, seems like they were just another trend. “Honestly, I don’t hate mine. I know it’s dated. Exactly as much as I am lol. I was having a lot of fun in the ’00s. Mine takes me back to those days. Also. I associate with other 40 somethings and guess what style they also have? Tribals and Chinese letters/ words were quite common” shared a user on Reddit.

Hyperpop and Cyberpunk Influence
The inspiration also has great influences from the futuristic style of cyberpunk, a branch of science fiction that emerged in the early 1980s, which references scientific and technological advances and punk, resulting in rebellious and conceptual artistic creations that break all concepts of cleanliness and minimalism.
