What Is “Dermorexia” and Why Kim Kardashian Is Selling Us a New Insecurity

Skims skinorexia 1 - what is “dermorexia” and why kim kardashian is selling us a new insecurity

Kim Kardashian loves to be controversial, and that’s nothing new. But this time, she chose one of the worst ways to do it — by playing with people’s insecurities, introducing a new word into our vocabulary: dermorexia.

Kim has done it again with a new product launch for Skims, her clothing brand. However, not everything is good news — she’s been bombarded with criticism from all sides. The product in question is the Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap, essentially a shaping wrap that resembles what people wear after chin liposuction. It’s designed to be worn while sleeping and promises to redefine your jawline through strategic compression.

But while it might sound tempting, there’s a dark side Kim Kardashian is profiting from — and for now, we’ll call it dermorexia.

Dermorexia is a non-clinical term that has gained popularity mostly on social media to describe an excessive obsession with having “perfect” skin. Though it’s not officially recognized as a mental disorder in manuals like the DSM-5, it’s linked to compulsive behavior and distorted body image, similar to body dysmorphia.

Qué es la ‘skinorexia’ y por qué kim kardashian nos está vendiendo una nueva inseguridad

Here are some of the main characteristics:

  • Obsession with skincare routines: Overuse of products, treatments, and aesthetic procedures.
  • Constant self-evaluation: Spending excessive time in front of the mirror searching for imperfections.
  • Social comparison: Driven by unrealistic beauty standards online, especially filters and edits.
  • Anxiety or frustration: When the skin doesn’t meet self-imposed expectations.

And the worst part about dermorexia? It’s becoming more and more common — especially when celebrities and beauty icons like Kim Kardashian launch products that essentially promise to sculpt your face.

This could trigger body image issues in anyone — whether they already struggle with them or not.

Kim Kardashian and How She Profits From Our Insecurities

This is where the Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap stops being an “innocent” accessory and becomes a vehicle for fueling dermorexia — as if social media alone weren’t already doing enough damage.

Skims sells the idea that all you need is eight hours of sleep while compressed to wake up with Bella Hadid’s jawline. But if you wake up tomorrow with the same chin, you’ll feel like you failed — not the product.

That logic reinforces an endless cycle of frustration – purchase – frustration that feeds dermorexia.

Skincare routines are no longer enough — no longer ending with a double cleanse. Now, you “need” to wrap your face in neoprene.
Someone struggling with an obsession over skin texture or symmetry gets pushed even further into compulsive behavior(“if it works one night, why not every night?”).

The problem isn’t just that Kim profits from our insecurities — it’s even worse if she’s inventing new ones just to sell us something we don’t actually need.
