The Internet Is Debating Whether Doritos Are Better in Mexico or the United States

Doritos méxico

Doritos are one of the best and most popular snacks in the world, and whoever tells you otherwise, knows nothing about life. These tasty fried triangles are more recognized in Mexico and the United States; however, true fans of this snack realized that there is a difference in the taste in both countries. Could it be?

Does Doritos Taste the Better in Mexico Than in the US?

Although the name is in Spanish, Doritos are not authentic Mexican cuisine; in fact, they were conceived in Southern California in the 1960s and are owned by PepsiCo. So… yes, Doritos is gringo.

Obviously, over the years, the recipe had to be modified to adapt to international tastes, so, likely, Mexicans do not taste the same as Americans. Let’s talk a little history and business stuff before I tell you why.

Doritos taste better mexico united states debate - the internet is debating whether doritos are better in mexico or the united states

PepsiCo acquired the Mexican snack brand Sabritas; today, Frito-Lay is PepsiCo’s US brand of potato chips, while Sabritas manufactures and sells snacks for the Mexican market. In other words, Sabritas Doritos are identical to the Frito-Lay version; they share the same name, packaging, and basic formula… although there is a subtle difference.

The Mexican version of Doritos would have a more intense, concentrated, and distinctive cheese and jalapeño flavor than the American version, according to true Doritos lovers. Classic American Doritos have spices in the ingredient list, are generally milder, and lack a strong jalapeño flavor. The testers mentioned that the Mexican Doritos would also have a thicker, crunchier texture.

On closer inspection, this sounds like Mexico’s would taste better than the ones from the United States, doesn’t it? Whew! And then at Dorilocos, more.

Some customers who have noticed this detail, have had to get their favorite snack through eBay and Amazon, since, despite being American residents, they are not satisfied with the flavor of Doritos available in the country. Just as with Mexican Coca-Cola, Americans prefer this one to the one from their country because it is sweetened with cane sugar.

Have you tried American and Mexican Doritos, and what differences have you noticed?
