Marvel continues to surprise us, and now they’ve done the unthinkable: they will immerse us firsthand in the ‘What If…?’ multiverse, the animated series that has already become one of the most beloved products of the MCU, through an augmented reality special that will be arriving soon.
In case you haven’t delved into ‘What If?’ yet, this animated series explores the corners of the multiverse, where anything is possible: the series has already presented us with some incredible scenarios, such as the possibility of an evil Dr. Strange, a Captain Britain with Peggy Carter, and many other realities.
Now, a new step has been taken, and Disney and Marvel announced that the first ‘What If?’ augmented reality special is coming, however, not everyone will be able to see it, at least not for now.
‘What If?’ will have its first interactive special through Apple Vision Pro
Through their social media channels, Marvel Entertainment announced that we will soon have a ‘What If?’ special very different from what we’re used to, as this time we’ll have an episode that could break the multiverse itself: a sort of interactive episode that will be exclusively released through Apple Vision Pro headsets.

“Throughout your journey in this immersive story, you will come face to face with multiversal variants of your favorite characters, learn mystical arts, and be tasked with harnessing the power of the Infinity Stones,” the statement says. Additionally, it’s ensured that we will be surrounded by stunning environments with new and iconic MCU locations, and impressive images and spatial audio.
So far, no release date or plot details for this special have been provided. However, since it will use virtual and augmented reality, it may immerse us in an adventure to explore the limits of the Marvel multiverse.
It will be exclusively released through Apple Vision Pro, an augmented reality device from Apple that has already become a trend on social media.
An important note is that the production of this augmented reality special will be handled by the company ILM Immersive, a division of LucasFilm dedicated to producing immersive experiences in virtual reality. In fact, this company has been responsible for some very important titles such as the 2020 shooter, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, or the PlayStation video game, Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series.
It’s worth pointing out that this is not the first ‘What If…?’ special. In December 2023, a Christmas episode was released that brought together some Marvel characters in an adventure to save Christmas, and although it didn’t cause much stir, it was a chapter very much appreciated by fans.

Advances for the upcoming season of ‘What If?’.
In the world of streaming and television, there have already been similar experiments where viewers’ decisions drive the story’s development, such as Netflix‘s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, which became a phenomenon by giving us control (literally) over the narrative of the special.
