A couple of days ago, Drake Bell revealed that when he was a child he was a victim of sexual abuse by Brian Peck, a dialogue coach at Nickelodeon. Few details emerged in the first preview of the documentary series Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, which will premiere on the 17th and 18th of March 2024. However, People magazine revealed more than the singer and actor said about the aggression he experienced when he was a minor, in this production.
Drake Bell Reveals Details of Nickelodeon Abuse
“Brian and I became very close because we had a lot of the same interests, which, looking back, I think was probably a little calculated,” says Drake Bell.
Drake Bell, who now lives in Mexico recalled that when he was 13 years old, in 1999, he got a gig on Nickelodeon’s The Amanda Show. It was not until the show’s second season that he met Brian Peck. Very “attentive” Brian made him his friend and took the opportunity to invite him to his house to give him acting lessons. The actor’s father noticed something strange and began to show concern and discomfort that this man was always around his son.
The relationship became so close that Brian became Drake’s manager. The dialogue coach took him to acting auditions in Los Angeles, a place that was an hour from the house where Drake lived with his mother, so he regularly stayed with Brian. Unfortunately, one of those nights marked Drake Bell’s life forever…
“I was sleeping on the couch where I usually sleep and I woke up… I opened my eyes and he was… he was sexually assaulting me,” recalled Drake, who was 15 years old at the time.
“I was paralyzed, in complete shock and I had no idea what to do or how to react (…) You know, every time I had an audition or every time I needed to work on a dialogue or something, I somehow ended up back in the Brian’s house. And it got worse, and worse, and worse, and worse, and I was trapped. I had no way out. The abuse was extensive and became quite brutal,” he said.
“I often think back to that time and wonder how the hell I survived (…) I remember all the abusive events, but everything else is very blurry to me, which is a shame because I experienced many wonderful things in my life and career during this time . But I was so overshadowed and ruined by what I was facing inside that it made it very difficult for me,” said the Drake & Josh star.
Drake Bell’s Life After Abuse
Brian was arrested and spent 16 months in prison, in addition to being ordered to register as a sex offender; However, the crime was known but not who the 15-year-old minor who was his victim was. Drake’s identity was kept secret until recently. After what happened, the famous man said, he began to drink a lot and take drugs. In addition, in 2021, it must be remembered that he pleaded guilty to abuse against a minor fan and was sentenced to two years of probation and community service.
Nickelodeon, upon learning what Drake Bell suffered, stated People where they regret what happened and offered him all their support.
“Now that Drake Bell has revealed his identity as a plaintiff in the 2004 case, we are shocked and saddened to learn of the trauma he has endured, and we commend and support the strength needed to move forward,” the brief states.
