The only thing better than the Met Gala is discussing the events of the Met Gala the next day… for example, Kim Kardashian’s dress.
In the 2024 edition of this event, we witnessed spectacular looks that captured everyone’s attention, and some others that failed to follow the established theme, and to the surprise of many (but not others), influencer Kim Kardashian falls into the latter group.
The founder of ‘Skims’ made her appearance on the red carpet wearing a fully customized outfit by Maison Margiela, consisting of a metallic bustier and a matching skirt with floral details, all crafted by John Galliano, the creative director of the brand.

She topped off the dress with a gray, fuzzy cardigan sweater, which was the most criticized aspect on social media. Fans argue that such pieces are not up to par for an event like the Met Gala.
Kim wore her platinum hair (very 2000s, if you ask me) in a natural style, which also did not sit well with the public, as they felt she could have achieved a much nicer look with some kind of hairstyle.
But what should really concern us is not her misguided outfit, but how uncomfortable she seemed during the red carpet event.
Several videos have already gone viral on social media showing the reality TV star literally struggling as she attempted to walk in the tight corset that was suffocating her.
Once again, the celebrity forced her body into a tiny piece to achieve a figure that is simply unreal. This worried hundreds of her fans and sparked much discussion on the internet as it’s clear how even breathing is difficult for her.
Kim Kardashian with blue lips, barely able to breathe due to extreme corseting at #MetGala. Extreme corseting is an S/M practice, but is KK consenting? And should she be? This extreme look sends all kinds of wrong messaging. pic.twitter.com/MmqrnspjM0

“Where are her organs?” “She’s literally suffering to walk and breathe,” X users express, who argue that there was no need to wear something so tight to the point of being dangerous.
Tiny waist, but at what cost?
This isn’t the first time Kim Kardashian has appeared at the Met Gala in such a tight outfit that she can barely breathe or move.
In 2019, the celebrity admitted that she had to take breathing exercise classes to be able to wear a corset by designer Thierry Mugler, which was so tight it didn’t allow her to move to the point where she couldn’t comfortably have dinner.
In 2022, on the red carpet, she admitted that she had to lose 7 kilos in 3 weeks to wear a dress that belonged to Marilyn Monroe, following a very strict diet where she wasn’t allowed to eat any type of carbohydrate or sugar. She also explained that she bought a sauna suit to intensify the reduction of her body.

The serious issue here is that she talks about it as if it’s something to be proud of, being able to fit into such pieces. Not only fans but also people in the entertainment industry like Lili Reinhart have expressed how wrong and dangerous these practices are.
Fashion isn’t meant to be suffered
The truth is, fashion shouldn’t be about suffering, as it’s a very beautiful way to express each individual’s personality. Our bodies should transform the fashion sense, not the other way around.
Clothing shouldn’t be uncomfortable, nor should it prevent you from performing your daily activities, let alone be an obstacle to moving freely or even breathing.
Normalizing and romanticizing suffering to achieve certain measurements or fit into a specific garment is the worst thing people with such international reach can do; celebrating fashion is definitely not about that at all.
