Gabby Thomas has captivated everyone of us with her remarkable journey from academia to the pinnacle of athletic achievement at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
And, surprise surprise! She is not only an Olympic medallist, she is also the first Harvard alumnus has won an Olympic gold medal in track and field in over a century.
Gabby Thomas Wins Gold at 200 Meter Race
In a thrilling 200-meter race at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Gabby Thomas outpaced her competitors, including Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia, to claim the gold medal. Her victory not only secured her a place in Olympic history but also inspired thousands on social media, who followed her journey from Harvard’s classrooms to the Olympic track.
Thomas, who previously won a bronze medal in the same event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, clocked an impressive 21.83 seconds in Paris, showcasing her exceptional speed and determination. Julien Alfred, who had already won gold for Saint Lucia in the 100 meters, finished second with a time of 22.08 seconds, while Brittany Brown, another American, took the bronze with 22.20 seconds.

“This is an indescribable feeling,” Thomas said after her victory. “I’ve worked incredibly hard for this moment, and it’s the result of six years of relentless effort and dedication.”
Her triumph is even more impressive considering her academic background. She graduated from Harvard with a degree in Neurobiology and Global Health, and she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Epidemiology and Healthcare Management at the University of Texas.
Her research focuses on racial disparities in access to healthcare in the United States, highlighting her commitment to making a difference both on and off the track.

Throughout her collegiate career, Thomas was a standout athlete. She became the first Ivy League sprinter to win an NCAA sprinting championship, setting a then-collegiate record of 22.38 seconds in the 200 meters.

Her coach, Kebba Tolbert, praised her talent and drive, noting that she has always been a “student of the sport” and has evolved into one of the world’s best sprinters.
