Competing in the women’s individual event, Hafez faced opponents from around the world. In her opening match, she fenced against Elizabeth Tartakovsky of the United States, winning with a score of 15-13. However, her journey ended in the last 16, where she lost 15-7 to Jeon Hayoung of South Korea at the Grand Palais in Paris.

In an emotional Instagram post, Hafez shared her experience:

“What appears to you as two players on the podium, they were actually three! It was me, my competitor, and my yet-to-come-to-our-world little baby!” She said in her IG post.

What Does the Olympic Rules Say About Pregnancy?

The Olympic rules do not explicitly prohibit pregnant athletes from competing. However, each sport’s governing body may have specific guidelines. Recently, UK Sport introduced official pregnancy guidance for Olympic and Paralympic athletes, supporting them during pregnancy and post-birth.

The focus is on maintaining a balance between life and sports. Additionally, a 2015 report commissioned by the International Olympic Committee emphasized that pregnancy should not confine women but rather provide an opportunity to continue an active lifestyle.
