Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics could be reinstated following USA Gymnastics’ submission of new evidence to overturn a controversial court ruling.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) initially demanded the return of Chiles’ medal after a Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) invalidated an inquiry by her coach that had increased her score, elevating her to third place.
Jordan Chiles and Ana Barbosu Controversy
The dispute began when Romanian gymnast Ana Maria Barbosu, along with the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, appealed the inquiry made by Chiles’ coach, Cecile Landi, during the floor exercise final on August 5.
The appeal argued that Landi submitted the inquiry four seconds past the one-minute time limit, making the score adjustment invalid.
The CAS sided with the Romanian team, leading to a ruling that reallocated the bronze medal to Barbosu, a decision that the FIG subsequently upheld.

However, on August 11, USA Gymnastics released a statement announcing that they had provided time-stamped video evidence showing that Landi’s inquiry was filed within the required time frame, precisely 47 seconds after the score was posted.
This evidence, they argued, was not previously available during the tribunal’s decision-making process, thus prompting a request for the CAS ruling to be revised and Chiles’ original score of 13.766 to be reinstated.

The ongoing legal battle has drawn significant attention, with both Chiles and Barbosu receiving intense scrutiny on social media.

Chiles, who has faced a barrage of negative comments, expressed her distress and announced a break from social media for her mental health.
“I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you.” she wrote via Instagram.
Barbosu, who has also been targeted, shared her understanding and empathy for both Chiles and her Romanian teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who had co-filed the appeal but was denied her own request to have her score adjusted.

As the gymnastics community awaits the final decision, the situation remains a point of contention. The USOPC has vowed to continue its fight, citing “critical errors” in the scoring and appeal process.
With emotions running high and the outcome still uncertain, the resolution of this dispute will be closely watched by fans and athletes alike.
