But let’s be real—in some events, what stole the show wasn’t just the jaw-dropping athletic feats, Paris 2024 was also packed with controversies that turned into hot topics of debate, adding some serious spice to the competition.
Of course we loved the feel-good stories, like countries winning medals for the first time or breaking long dry spells. Shoutout to Saint Lucia, Guatemala, Panama, and Peru for making history!
But, while the sports stories were inspiring, the drama was absolutely next-level.
The Biggest Controversies from Paris 2024 Olympics
Dirty Waters in the Seine River
France spent a whopping €1.4 billion cleaning up the Seine River for the Olympic open water swimming competitions. Despite all the hype and even a pre-Games swim by officials to prove the river was ready, things didn’t go as planned.
High pollution levels led to several athletes getting sick, including Belgian swimmer Jolien Vermeylen. So much for that squeaky-clean river!
A Drag Queen Last Supper?
The opening ceremony on the Seine River had a showstopper moment that sparked outrage: a group of Drag Queens recreated a scene eerily similar to Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”
Religious organizations and public figures –like the Vatican- were not amused, forcing the organizers to apologize. They clarified that the scene was actually inspired by Jan Harmensz’s “Banquet of the Gods,” but the damage was already done.
Boxing Drama with Transgender Accusations
Boxers Imane Khelif from Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting from Taiwan found themselves at the center of a social media storm after being accused of being transgender. Khelif faced the brunt of the attacks, especially after defeating her Italian opponent in just 46 seconds.
Despite the controversy, both athletes took home gold medals, and Khelif is now suing for cyberbullying.
Drone Spying Scandals
Canada got caught in a spy scandal when French authorities discovered that members of their team had used a drone to spy on New Zealand’s squad during training.
The Canadian team was hit with a six-point deduction, which hurt their standings, even though they won both of their games.
Olympic Village Woes
The conditions at the Olympic Village were far from ideal, leading to complaints from several athletes. Issues with uncomfortable beds, terrible food, and broken air conditioning pushed some delegations to ditch the village altogether and move to private hotels.
Italian swimmer Thomas Ceccon, who won gold, was even spotted catching some Z’s in a park after complaining about the village’s poor conditions.
Bronze Medal Mix-Up
One of the biggest scandals came in artistic gymnastics when American gymnast Jordan Chiles was mistakenly awarded the bronze medal. Initially, she was ranked fifth, while Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu took third place.
However, after a review requested by the American delegation, Chiles was bumped up to third. Five days later, it was revealed that the review request was submitted four seconds too late, forcing the medal to be returned to Barbosu. Ouch.
Convicted Rapist Competes in Paris 2024
Dutch beach volleyball player Steven van de Velde found himself at the center of a media firestorm when it came to light that he had been convicted of sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy in 2016.
Despite serving just 13 months of a four-year sentence, van de Velde competed in Paris 2024, where he and his teammate were booed at every game.
The controversy was so intense that he didn’t stay in the Olympic Village and needed extra security throughout the Games. Unsurprisingly, his team was knocked out after the group stage with only one win.
