Yes, as you heard it, Mean Girls is having a remake, and although we, as the public, have it very clear we don’t want any remakes, it seems movie studios didn’t get the memo, or simply don’t care. Still, the movie, which isn’t that old to be getting this treatment, is about to release a remake that nobody wants.
Tina Fey, went back to her Burn Book to revisit her successful classic film and decided she wanted to give it another perspective, or she simply wanted to profit more from it, who knows? The thing is, why would you touch a masterpiece that doesn’t need any changes? I mean, you wouldn’t ask Michelangelo to come back to life and work on the David or the Pietá, wouldn’t you?
And still, it’s not really the story we get to see in this very first trailer that has people angry about this new Mean Girls version. It’s not even the fact that Tina Fey called us old by saying “Isn’t your mom’s Mean Girls;” what fans are really upset about is the low quality of the fashion portrayed in the trailer.

Mean Girls or Shein Girls?
As fans noted, the fashion choices seem all over the place for the characters. Yes, Genzers have revolutionized fashion and they have reimagined fashion from other decades, but siding with the fans, the outfits in the trailer just look like someone old simply went into the Shein catalog to dress the characters.
But clothes aside, the metaphor goes beyond the quality of the pieces, but all in all it just seems like a low-quality version of the movie. A forced and derivative movie using old jokes that don’t land well, and new gags that try to appeal to another generation but that don’t quite fit into today’s narrative or concerns.
more like the shein girls…..wtf is this? https://t.co/oYFlpyezTq

Mean Girls has been such a success because it really delved into the preoccupations of a generation that was constantly pressured to look and think like a product. Today’s youth is more aware of these matters, and although the pressure still prevails, we all are more aware of our surroundings and our self-value. Forcing this narrative into today’s reality simply feels like Tina Fey and the producers of the film haven’t understood that times change.
Yes, the power of social media will have a huge impact on this story, and we can all agree the Internet can be savage. Still, it feels odd that the trailer is showing pretty much the same story we all saw and loved back in the day.

Facts About the Mean Girls Remake
Although the trailer makes it feel like a low-quality copy of the original film, it’s not quite so. It’s a movie based on the Broadway version that is based on the original movie. In fact, this remake is a musical movie which makes it even more unnecessary if you ask me.
We get to see a couple of recurring actors in the film like Tina Fey herself and Tim Meadows reprising their iconic roles. However, the main characters are played by other actresses. This time Reneé Rapp and Angourie Rice are in the roles of Regina George and Cady Heron, respectively.
This version will hit the big screen on January 11, 2024, although it was originally planned to be released exclusively on the Paramount+ streaming platform. Here’s the trailer so you can have your own opinion.
